How to transfer a domain

Changing Registrar usually leaves websites and email running if nameservers are unchanged. Costs, confirmations and any change to the expiry date depend on the extension: always check the domain price list.

How to transfer your domain: 4 steps

  1. Obtain the code: for a .it domain, AuthInfo is issued by the Registrar at registration; for gTLDs covered by ICANN policy, if it is not available through self-service, the Registrar must provide it within 5 calendar days of the request.
  2. Remove locks where required: some gTLDs require the transfer lock to be disabled. If the Registrar does not offer self-service unlocking, ICANN policy requires removal within 5 calendar days of the registrant's request.
  3. Start the order: enter the domain, complete payment and provide any required documents. Submission to the Registry can start when the order, code and details are correct.
  4. Confirm where required: some extensions or Registrars send an authorisation email, so this step depends on the registrant's response time. Once submitted to the Registry, the times below apply.

When is a domain transfer unavailable?

A transfer may be blocked by an incorrect code, lock or redemption status, a dispute or missing confirmations. For gTLDs covered by ICANN policy, the Registrar may deny a transfer within 60 days of creation or a previous transfer. A 60-day lock may also apply after a change of registrant, taking account of any opt-out offered by the Registrar. These restrictions are not a universal rule for .it domains.

How long does it take?

For a .it domain, after a valid request to the Registry, pendingTransfer status lasts no more than one day; the former Registrar can approve earlier or object only in the permitted cases. For gTLDs covered by ICANN policy, transfer completes within 5 calendar days of the request to the Registry, unless approved earlier or denied on permitted grounds. Add the time needed to obtain the code, remove any locks, complete the order and respond to confirmations. Sources: .it Registry and ICANN Transfer Policy.

Will my website and email stay active?

Changing Registrar alone does not automatically change nameservers and can leave your website and email running. Continuity must be planned if DNS, hosting or email services change: keep a copy of your data and agree on the required settings before transferring.

Before starting a transfer

Check these points to avoid blocks or delays in the process.

Up-to-date registrant email

Some extensions or Registrars require confirmation by email: check that the domain's contact address is reachable.

Monitor expiry

Start well before expiry, as times and confirmations vary by extension.

Auth code available

Request the authorisation code from your current registrar or provider.

gTLD restrictions

For many gTLDs, ICANN policy permits a lock within 60 days of registration or a previous transfer. This rule is not universal for .it domains.

Check domain status

Where required for the extension, ask your current provider to remove the transfer lock and check that the domain is not in redemption.

Expiry after transfer

Costs and any extension of the expiry date depend on the TLD: check the conditions shown during the order.
